	I have just started the Beginner Guitar Blastoff course and, I must say, it far exceeds anything I have attempted before in terms of the level of detail and quality of delivery - congratulations on a well structured and interesting course.
</p>

<p>
	I am using a Yamaha G225A classical guitar that serves the purpose of being my "stunt" guitar in terms of practice. I do own a second Martinez Electro-Classical guitar which will be utilised when I become competent as a guitar player.
</p>

<p>
	Should I be using a finger style or plectrum for the 2, 3 and 4 chord progression practice drills -down strokes and upstrokes?

	Hi all, For the past few months I have been practicing and progression has slowed to a bit of a crawl. <br />
	This has me stuck in a bit of a rut to be honest. Kinda losing a bit of my motivation and Mojo.<br />
	Usually when this happens I will simply leave my guitar alone for a few days other than maybe picking it up whilst adverts are on tv to run through a few scales or exercises.<br />
	So this time I have decided to just try something different and have started the Blues secrets course.<br />
	I have done the first 2 lessons and wow so much to practice already but it has got me my Mojo back and got me back to my practice room and plugging stuff in etc. <br />
	My take away from this is that you don't have to be so focused on one thing to perfection before exploring new and inspiring things when learning to play guitar. <br />
	By doing this it has put my guitar back in my hands with enthusiasm so I am finding I am running through the tracks I am learning but got a bit jaded with because my guitar is in my hands.<br />
	In turn this brings me to a book I read recently called Atomic secrets, (I recommend it big time for all aspects of life) Generally it tells you to make things easy. If you have a guitar do not put it away after practicing, leave it out easy to reach. It is one less step to practicing if you don't have to take it out of its case etc. <br />
	I was thinking of putting up a kind of blog post with a few cringe videos of my learning with this course to see how I progress but not sure you are ready to deal with that. lol. <br />
	Anyhow Im rambling now so I am going to go and practice my 12 bar blues progressions with a shuffle, not me shuffling but the progression.
</p>

<p>
	Happy strumming Y'all, peace out. <span><span class="ipsEmoji">🙂</span></span>

	Hi Everyone
</p>

<p>
	Just wanted to table something for beginners and intermediates (like myseld).
</p>

<p>
	I was looking at the  excellent NGA fingerstyle course.  Two tutors there MK and Jack with 1000s of hours teaching experience.
</p>

<p>
	MK mentions two methods of playing with the right hand early on (anchoring and free style).
</p>

<p>
	There is a third which I over use …anchoring with the fourth (pinkie) finger.  You can see Jack occasionally uses it in the course.
</p>

<p>
	 You can also see how he uses free a lot eg when hybrid picking…..(I wish)
</p>

<p>
	Sadly  although I have found pinkie anchoring VERY useful for complex fingerpicking it does hamper me now
</p>

<p>
	I am trying to use percussive and hybrid/plectrum work.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	<u><em>(I think at one Livestream MK mentioned that those who used plectrums</em></u>
</p>

<p>
	<em><u>early on seemed to advance more rapidly?</u></em>
</p>

<p>
	I have noticed that some pros use a thumb pick (e.g. Chet Atkins) and their fingers or just their fingers but most have their hands free
</p>

<p>
	and not tethered.
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.guitarworld.com/lessons/chet-atkins-fingerpicking-country-guitar" rel="external nofollow">https://www.guitarworld.com/lessons/chet-atkins-fingerpicking-country-guitar</a>
</p>

<p>
	Mark Knopfler is another one to study and features here too… You can see Chet occasionally is tethering during his solo work…..<br />
	<br />
	It is going to take a LOT of work to wean me off this but I would still recommend beginners explore it as ONE method to try at the
</p>

<p>
	start of their journey.<u><strong> I would recommend they try all three though….</strong></u>.
</p>

<p>
	I have ccd MK and Adam who will have very vaiuable insights I am sure.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Not sure if this warrants a Livestream btw...</strong>

	I haven't checked the other courses yet, but I'm having trouble with the buffering in the Fingerstyle course - doesn't appear to be an issue with my devices since I've tried with my iPad and my Mac laptop and I'm also not having issues with a different guitar lesson website that uses video so I'm thinking this is on NGA's side.  Anyone else having any issues?  This only showed up within the last week so not sure if it is an issue with these particular lessons or if something is going on at the NGA website.  Any info/feedback is appreciated.  Cheers!

	Again a great course to study...I was amazed at the "one finger" demonstrations, easy to follow, almost always getting lost when all the fingers are moving. A lot of this was mentioned in Livestreams as preliminary information. Mike cleans it all up with details that are easy to understand and learn.

	OK, I've shelved my novice approach to songwriting and gotten down to thinking about songwriting by starting with chords. But the thought of creating my own music really motivates me, and I feel that it has helped me learn. So I have a question.

<p>
	Doesn't most music mix chords and arpeggios?

	I was reviewing the series in lesson 4 again and wondered whether using a strap to hold the guitar in position helps. I feel that it helps me by freeing me from having to hold my guitar in position with the upper part of my right arm or sit so it rests on my left thigh. I also like that it allows me to walk around while I practice.

		Sorry folks, the pest again - in the diagram below, I understand this is a fingerpicking exercise, BUT,  when doing the exercise, should I be making the chord fully when fingerpicking the notes? The diagram only shows the strings and frets to pluck...not necessarily with that chord made, only a couple of notes within the chord?

	I discovered a percussive technique while exploring those mentioned in the video. No, I certainly did not discover something new. I don't know where else it is used, but if you want to play early blues, this will expand your toolbox.
</p>

<p>
	Striking (not plucking) the strings of a chord with the nails of all four fingers (perpendicularly) as though you were holding a pick produces a ringing sound I have heard in a lot of early blues songs. It's very nearly like the sound of a twelve string guitar, but more so, because each note rings out four times in a single stroke. It's a cool sound, whether played using hard strikes or light and on a dobro, forget about it! Damn, I love a guitar.

I thought position 1 started at Fret 5, position 2 at 7th fret,  position 3 at 10th fret, position 4 open  and 3rd fret, and position 5 starting at 3rd fret. I'm missing something or not able to grasp that each position is movable and able to apply it. I hope this makes sense, I was on line and positions were shown in different order.....thanks

	I have been using "songwriting" as a learning device. Based on the lesson, I have to admit it's backward--I wanted to play a melody and did so. It's the approach I took before joining the NGA.
</p>

<p>
	I have the blues in my head, melodies I want to play, but didn't know how to make the sounds. So I started playing various scales in different keys until I found the sound that worked.
</p>

<p>
	So I have a simple little melody. I have a few alternate versions of what I've titled Blues in G #1 but put together one of them for review. It should be played slowly and I'm considering playing the slide tones in half notes instead of quarters. I'm still working on lyrics that will give it a name, and paired the melody with seventh chords in a 12 bar blues progression.
</p>

<p>
	Any feedback from anyone, even if it's a bit harsh, is welcome. I'm still working on how each chord is played and need suggestions on how to notate/depict the rhythm--because I use the partials that Mike suggested in one of the lessons. But, if anyone has a suggestion about playing the chords, please do. And, recommendations for songwriting software are badly needed.
</p>

<p>
	BTW--I tune my guitars to open D. If I can make music with the forms in that tuning, I will have fulfilled my ambition.
</p>

	So here I go again sounding like a Marketing ploy...<span class="ipsEmoji">😂</span><span class="ipsEmoji">🤣</span> - But, I have to give NGA a full on Standing Ovation. As I have said before, my guitar playing History and experience is based on learning by ear. Basically, my whole life, I tried to reproduce sounds. I never learned any type of theory or basic understanding of how music is built! Since I retired, I decided to try to get a better understanding of what it was I was doing. Well, after joining the NGA, I received my assessment and have been addressing my priorities. After a few areas and parts of courses to help my progress, one of my main goals was to go through the Barre Chord Secrets Course. I have been involved with other online guitar courses, and even though I knew some of the guitar lingo because of my past, I found that even with my Many Years of experience I was getting WAY TOO Overwhelmed. It got me to thinking??? Even though these programs state it is a great start for beginners, they soon become less and less targeted in the teachings, and I could easily see how a PURE BEGINNER would very quickly give up! I cannot believe how easy it is for me to understand the teachings that NGA provides. I can make Barre Chords. I always could, BUT, I had no idea what the root note was and how that easily could identify the chord you were playing no matter where on the fretboard you played the shape. Even the simplicity of building up from a Power Chord to a full on Barre Chord and the explanation of the process as you go. If you are a PURE BEGINNER - you are certainly VERY LUCKY to find this Program and be here as Opposed to some others!! Hats off to the NGA Team for one of the Best laid out programs I have seen so far. And the cost$$$$ - my goodness - I know people that took live lessons and paid this annual fee in just 1 month!! Absolutely the BEST I have seen, and I am so Very OK to say so!!!
</p>

<p>
	Sorry for the drawn out babbling, But it is so good, here at 6:30 am, I couldn't sleep so I watched 4 sessions of the Barre Chord Course while lying in bed awake since 4:30 am <span class="ipsEmoji">😳</span><span class="ipsEmoji">😳</span>

	Hello NGA. I've learnt so much from the NGA and am really enjoying the courses and advice you provide us with - please keep it up.
</p>

<p>
	One topic that is frequently mentioned is practicing by playing along to a backing track or the original recording. I understand this conceptually and how to find the recording (my music library) and a backing track (various guitar websites etc) but I find that when I think about actually doing it - my mind goes blank - I don't know where to begin.
</p>

<p>
	It would help me if you could demonstrate how a beginner does this using a simple song.
</p>

<p>
	Might sound too obvious to put on a video but it would really help me if I could see a demonstration.
</p>

<p>
	Regards from south Oxfordshire,

	I'm making slow but steady progress through BCS but I've hit a snag on lesson 4.3.
</p>

<p>
	When Mike adds upstrums to the powerchords I can't quite figure out the strumming pattern - would you be able to spell it out for me!
</p>

<p>
	The other issue is when playing powerchords with upstrums my pick is snagging on the strings. I've gradually moved up pick thickness with open chords from 0.38 to 0.71 so should I go back to 0.38 until I've got the hang of it? I also wonder if I'm showing too much of the pick to the string - how much pick should extend from my fingers?
</p>

<p>
	Any advice gratefully received.

	Just joined the NGA group.  When I got the first couple lessons, "Guitar Metrics" were featured with a suggestion that I download the guitar metric plan assembled for me.  When I download, I simply get a copy of the icon depicted in the email - a pictorial representation of the 3 different parts of the metric - not the individual parts that can be viewed/studied separately.  Can you help, what am I doing wrong?
